NHS Croydon CCG

A tailored, end-to-end recruitment process resulting in 30 hires across the department.

The Situation

NHS Croydon CCG had a number of permanent and interim roles across multiple workstreams that they had spent nearly 12 months trying to hire.

They needed a commercially viable route to sourcing and attracting a broad set of skills across programme management, PMO, pathway redesign, commissioning management (multiple workstreams, planned and unplanned), urgent care, primary care, business planning and transformation.

The Challenge

Like many employers in the UK, particularly those in the public sector, talent attraction was a major challenge for NHS Croydon CCG. Whilst they have a great culture, strong values and enticing job opportunities, getting that messaging out to the target audience required a specialist approach.

Speed of hire was a major issue. After 12 months of struggling to fill business critical roles, they needed a specialist who could deliver results quickly.

In cost-controlled environments like the NHS, hiring the best talent is a major challenge. An alternative solution was needed to help NHS Croydon CCG hire the best talent for their projects within the scope of hiring budgets. Additionally, not having the right talent in place was placing major stress on existing projects.

Many of the roles required niche skills that typically don’t exist in the market. Often in these circumstances, it is hard to ascertain a candidate’s level of expertise and approach to problem-solving in an interview alone.

The Solution

We designed the entire end-to-end recruitment process for Croydon CCG.

To overcome cost challenges, we created a retained search proposition that involved staged payment and overall cost savings of up to 25% per role.

We implemented a 3 step interview process, the final stage being Thomas International psychometric assessments and bespoke competency tests, requiring candidates to provide an overview of how they would approach a job-specific scenario.

We helped NHS Croydon CCG bring out the best in their employer offering by creating a branded campaign across multiple platforms, and a microsite that helped us position them as an employer of choice to targeted audiences. We worked with NHS Jobs to channel all adverts through the microsite used traffic monitoring to build better market intelligence and further tailor our approach.

Employer value proposition is often not considered when writing job specifications, yet is critical to the successful attraction of talent.

We worked in collaboration with their stakeholders to develop tailored job descriptions, providing consultation and guidance to help them develop concise deliverable-focused specifications.

The Results

Our pro-active approach to building talent communities, coupled with this tailored solution resulted in us filling 90% of their roles within 10 weeks.

Our strength in employer propositioning ensured that they were able to attract and hire the best talent for their team, resulting in them meeting major project goals on time and within budget.

We have placed 30 candidates so far with NHS Croydon CCG, including: PMO Managers, Heads of Commissioning, Planning and Estates Managers, Commissioning Managers, Programme Managers.
